Galeria Przypływ presents the latest exhibition by artist Katarzyna Swinarska, Absent Lovers. It tells the story of how a woman’s solitude is inextricably entwined with every romantic relationship. It is not only the aftermath of a breakup. It speaks of grandfathers, fathers, and husbands working at sea or abroad. Of men fighting and dying in wars. Of those who, though physically present, become emotionally distant.
“We open the exhibition the day after Valentine’s Day because love and longing are two sides of the same coin. When we choose to love someone, we must also be prepared to lose them. The artist dresses this tale of passion and solitude in the costume of many different stories. She gives shape and color to intense emotions,” says curator Agata Abramowicz.
Swinarska experiments in her work, refusing to confine herself to a single aesthetic. Her paintings oscillate between figuration and abstraction. Intense colors fill large, expressive canvases, contrasting with dark, oppressive compositions reminiscent of beautiful yet poisonous or devouring flowers. As unpredictable and diverse as Swinarska’s vision of femininity—full of contradictions.
